As installers of permanent home generators, we oftentimes hear many stories of what motivates people to have a home generator, we decided to share a sample with you…
My wife and I decided to take a nice vacation/business trip to Asia, we had a beautiful and successful stay while we were there. Our trip home included a very long airplane ride as well as a pretty long ride home from the airport. It was the typical cold for the beginning of January.
On our way home, we decided to run a few errands. Our thoughts were to get home, take a nice hot shower and some good sleep from our trip. We stopped by the supermarket, picked up our dog up from the kennel, and stopped by the post office. Upon arriving at home we were more focused on the piles of snow we had to shovel than the obvious lack of lights we had left on.
When we walked into our home, it was cold, very cold and the electric was not on. As we turned on the faucet, the water was not coming out. When we called the electric company to report the outage a message came across the phone they knew about it and were working on it.
My wife called the neighbors only to find out that it had been out for three days now. Many of them were staying at hotels. Some of the neighbors who were not staying at a hotel were passing around a portable generator to thaw and keep pipes from freezing, but it was not enough to keep any of the homes warm. As she made these calls, I started a fire in the fireplace and moved what was left of our still frozen food outside into the snow.
Fortunately, it was only a couple of hours later when our electric came back on, but then came the process of cleaning up and thawing out. Some of our pipes burst during the thawing process which alone cost several thousand to fix.
We decided at that time that the chances of this happening again were slim, until it did. This time we were not away, we were home. We love our home, but as we get older we decided a home generator was something that gave us a bit more control to lessen the burden of the unpredictable storms here in the Poconos.
Electricity keeps our lives moving forward, the above couple was very lucky not to have developed even worse issues such as mold in their walls that may have affected their health and been an even more expensive clean-up. If you are thinking about having a permanent home generator installed, now is the time to do it. Once the ground freezes the process becomes much more expensive or impossible.
